PathWest Introduces Dermatophyte PCR Testing For Faster Results
PathWest is pleased to announce the implementation of Dermatomycosis PCR testing directly on clinical specimens. This PCR test will partially replace traditional dermatophyte culture methods for appropriate samples. Testing is now available at Fiona Stanley Hospital, with QEII testing to commence shortly.
This advancement will significantly reduce turnaround times for identifying common dermatophytes – from several weeks to just days – enhancing patient care and clinical decision-making.
Key features of the new testing protocol:
- PCR testing will be performed if sufficient sample is available
- Microscopy and culture will still be performed when relevant, including if Trichophyton indotineae is suspected (as PCR will detect it as Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex or Trichophyton species)
How to request
Request ‘Dermatophyte PCR’ or ‘Dermatomycosis PCR’ on appropriate specimen types (skin, hair, nails). This test will now be the first-line investigation for requests for dermatophyte or fungal culture of skin, nails, or hair.
Turnaround time
Samples will be batched and tested once or twice per week.
Medicare eligibility
Fully refundable by Medicare (Bulk-Bill) with a valid Medicare card.
Sample Requirements
- Acceptable specimens: skin scrapings, hair, nails in a sterile container (please do not include the scalpel blade in the container)
- Each site should be collected and submitted separately
- Swabs are not suitable for PCR testing.
