25 Years of quality support to Justice: The Scientific Impact of PathWest Forensic Biology
15/04/2026
From working with WA Police to identify the Claremont serial killer to solving some of the State’s most baffling criminal and missing persons investigations, PathWest forensic scientists play a pivotal role in supporting the administration of justice in Western Australia.
Due to its sensitivity, the important scientific work of our forensic biology scientists is often done behind the scenes without public recognition, but this week we shine the spotlight on a significant milestone - 25 years of continuous accreditation by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA). Recognised nationally and internationally, this accreditation demonstrates PathWest’s technical competence and credibility in the field of forensic biology over a quarter of a century.
Forensic DNA profiling is regarded as the gold standard in scientific evidence and it is crucial that the work done by PathWest forensic scientists is of the highest quality. Being accredited by NATA is an important way of independently demonstrating that quality.
Recognised as a leader in the field of forensic science, PathWest Forensic Biology is represented on national and international committees and has made a significant contribution to forensic science research, having recently published its 50th research paper.
It is the lead service in Australia for uploading DNA profiles to the National Criminal Investigation DNA database - more than 580,000 DNA profiles out of a national total of 2.04 million. A significant effort and clear extension of its scientific work in supporting investigations and delivering justice.
Congratulations to our forensic biology team - we acknowledge and celebrate your professionalism, your innovation and your dedication. You possess a strong and positive quality culture that supports scientific best practice and innovation. You are leaders in your field, and we are incredibly proud of what you have achieved.
