The Enteric laboratory provides a State wide enteric bacteriology and parasitology service. The laboratory is located at the QEII Medical Centre and provides a range of general and specialist services including comprehensive Salmonella Typing. A number of other enteric pathogens can be further characterised for medical and public health epidemiological purposes.
Faecal samples can be analysed for the presence of:
- Salmonella spp and Shigella spp
- Campylobacter spp
- Clostridium difficile
- Aeromonas spp
- Vibrio spp
- Yersinia enterocolitica
- E. coli O-157
- Bacillus cereus
- Listeria spp
- Staphylococcus spp
- Clostridium perfringens
- pathogenic and non-pathogenic parasites
- Occult blood
Human ectoparasites can also be submitted for identification including Phthirus pubis (pubic louse), Pediculus capitus (head louse), Pediculus corporis (body louse) and Sarcoptes scabiei (scabies mite)
