IWD 2023 - Department of Haematology QEII
27/03/2023

Our International Women's Day Spotlight 2023 continues in its final week.

Thank you to Tracy Dixon, Acting Network Principal Scientist, for the response from the Department of Haematology, QEII.

In a world that is constantly changing, how have the roles and contributions of women in science or your profession or discipline evolved over the past few years?
In my 35 years in the industry, I have seen more women enter medical science, notice more women in key leadership roles, as well as many more women as consultant haematology specialists. The shift to more family friendly working arrangements has allowed this, as part-time senior positions were not an option early in my career.

Has there been a shift in career paths women choose today compared to the past few decades?
There are many more options for women these days, that allow a balance of family and work life as employees realise the value women can bring. Many of the women I know choose careers based on passion but also work-life balance.

What networks have you found helpful for building a supportive community of women in your profession or discipline?
I have networks across the organisation of women who inspire and mentor me, as well as supportive colleagues and mentors of all genders and ages. Having a diverse network means I can reach out to many people for different reasons. Building relationships through secondments, changing jobs within the organisation and seeking challenging opportunities, such as committees, training courses or working groups, has helped me develop these networks.

What advice would you give someone who is just starting out in your profession or discipline?
Be open to new opportunities, have a go and don’t let anyone tell you things can’t be done differently.

What message would you like to share with women around the world?
Women are strong and capable of anything, and we need to support one another in our different approaches to achieving success both at work and home.
