27/03/2023
Our International Women's Day Spotlight 2023 continues in its final week, featuring the Department of Haematology at FSH.
Thanks to Dr Stephanie P’Ng (left) and Dr Allison Barraclough (right) for the combined response from the department.
In a world that is constantly changing, how have the roles and contributions of women in science or your profession or discipline evolved over the past few years?
The representation of women in Haematology has increased considerably over the last decade. There are many women in our profession who are world leaders in research and clinical service paving the way for our trainees to be inspired to follow a similar path.
Has there been a shift in career paths women choose today compared to the past few decades?
Women are now represented in all fields of medicine, whereas in the past they were a minority. This diversity in the workplace allows for a variety of worldview perspectives that enhances patient care.
What networks have you found helpful for building a supportive community of women in your profession or discipline?
The women in lymphoma network is an international alliance dedicated to the promotion of leadership of female lymphoma clinicians, researchers and educators. This group promotes and provides mentorship and advocates for equal representation at conferences, committees and in research opportunities.
HOW collaborative is a formalised group that focusses on women’s care. Also the societies such as THANZ and HSANZ are very supportive to all young/ new trainees and consultants but is not specifically communities of women.
What advice would you give someone who is just starting out in your profession or discipline?
Don’t be limited by what you perceive to be obstacles in your profession. Fight for your passions and realise your goals. Be persistent. Surround yourself with helpful supportive people.
What message would you like to share with women around the world?
Thank you to all the amazing women in medicine that promote gender equality in academic medicine and life.
