Our International Women's Day Spotlight 2023 continues in its final week, featuring Dr Jane Estrella, first year genetic pathology trainee.
Meet Jane - a first year genetic pathology trainee at PathWest with a passion for learning. Her previous roles include working as an Endocrinologist, a Clinical Geneticist, and recently completed a PhD. She was the North American Mitochondrial Disease Consortium (NAMDC) Fellow last year, where she spent a year learning among various centres of excellence in the United States.
In a world that is constantly changing, how have the roles and contributions of women in science or your profession or discipline evolved over the past few years?
Women have been contributing a great deal in these fields since time immemorial and women have greater recognition in the fields and an acknowledgement that having a family does not make a woman’s contribution less.
What networks have you found helpful for building a supportive community of women in your profession or discipline?
I think one should start by learning to recognize when women within their community are not supportive of their pursuits.
What advice would you give someone who is just starting out in your profession or discipline?
There is a Japanese saying “Fall down seven times, stand up eight.” Make sure you enjoy what you are doing because it is that love that will carry you through the hard times, of which there will be many.
What message would you like to share with women around the world?
“Let’s be kind to one another” and keep in mind a maxim by Churchill , “ Courage is what it takes to stand up and talk. Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.”
