Our International Women’s Day Spotlight 2023 continues in its final week, featuring the Department of Finance, Procurement and Research Governance.

In a world that is constantly changing, how have the roles and contributions of women in science or your profession or discipline evolved over the past few years?
Women by nature are good communicators with high intellectual intelligence, emotional intelligence, adversity intelligence and social intelligence. With the growth of women in workforce, we are starting to see positive impacts and changes within workplaces. Some of the examples would be inclusion of engagement and empathy within workplaces, contributions towards moulding of the healthy culture, bringing in different perspectives and leadership styles, empowerment and collaboration rather than intense competition, stronger link to the community that we serve, establishing trust and long-term partnerships with our colleagues and clients and many more.

Has there been a shift in career paths women choose today compared to the past few decades?
With the growth of the society and support of modernisation, the positive shift in culture, the strength and empowerment of women standing up for their rights, and the men in our society taking a stand and willing to protect and support the women in their lives, more and more women are exposed to opportunities to be educated, to have a career, to hold their own money and to pursue their dreams.

With growing equality and supportive environment, more and more women are now able to utilise both their intellect and their hearts to bring positive impacts in our society.

What advice would you give someone who is just starting out in your profession or discipline?

  • Be a sponge - Learn as much as you can
  • Always remember that you have a lot to contribute
  • Don’t be afraid to lean in, reach out, ask for help and ask for opportunities
  • Have an open communication
  • Don’t second guess your abilities and skills
What message would you like to share with women around the world?
We have been empowered by the past; we are now much more liberated. Let’s create a space for other women and hold the door for others too. Let’s help and support one another and be there for each other. We rise by lifting each other up.
