International Women's Day Spotlight - Department of Forensic Pathology

IWD 2023 - Department of Forensic Pathology
02/04/2023

Our International Women's Day Spotlight 2023 continues in its final week featuring the Department of Forensic Pathology.

In a world that is constantly changing, how have the roles and contributions of women in science or your profession or discipline evolved over the past few years?
Forensic pathology and mortuary work have certainly changed over the last 10-15 years with many important changes including post mortem CT and working along with community expectations.

The work has changed focus with fewer internal examinations now being performed but the roles physical and emotional demands are increasing due to technology and case type, but this only makes the work more challenging and rewarding.

Has there been a shift in career paths women choose today compared to the past few decades?
The number of women interested in the Forensic science field continues to grow and has been rising since the introduction of numerous true and fictional crime shows. This has been particularly noticeable in mortuary work which is unusual as this used to be a male dominated field.

What networks have you found helpful for building a supportive community of women in your profession or discipline?
We have our own strong network here within the Department and support each other. The wider forensic community across Australasia is also a great resource.

What advice would you give someone who is just starting out in your profession or discipline?
The role is certainly not what you see on the TV, but each day is completely different and interesting. The work can be difficult not only physically tiring but emotionally and mentally. It is hard not to become involved or touched by the cases and many stories that you deal with on a daily basis. Managing this part of the job can be difficult but with experience you learn to redirect your focus and energy to the task ahead, to do your very best for that person and their family and help find some answers and closure. This makes the profession so very rewarding and satisfying.

We have a great team here to help and support everyone each day and through those more difficult and challenging cases.

What message would you like to share with women around the world on International Women’s Day?
Be courageous and believe in yourself and your abilities and amazing things will happen.
