Collaborative success at the WA Stem Cell Transplant and CAR-T Therapy Workshop

13/12/2023
On Friday 27 October, the inaugural WA Stem Cell Transplant and CAR-T Therapy Workshop was held at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) Education Building.

It was a great opportunity for the 106 attendees (adult and paediatric patients and their families) to learn about aspects of transplant and cell therapies and to hear from the community support organisations that provide post-transplant services in WA.

The Workshop was hosted by the FSH Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, which includes PathWest Bone Marrow Transplant Laboratory, FSH Medical Haematology, Ward 7D and Cancer Centre, and WA Paediatric and Adolescent Transplantation and Cellular Therapies Program at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH).

Inspiring stories from five guest patients sharing their transplant journeys not only moved other patients and their families, but also their treating teams.

For paediatric patients, it was a great opportunity for their families to meet their child’s future treating teams as they transition from adolescent post-transplant care at PCH to adult pos-transplant care at FSH.

At the workshop, the treating teams connected with their patients, where they sought their feedback from the transplant program service and witnessed their improved health and post-transplant outcomes. It was a rare opportunity for staff to see their patients recovering and returning to their normal lives.

All in all, it was a huge success engaging with patients and celebrating their achievements.
