From Aboriginal Cadet to Laboratory Technician
07/07/2023
Jack Murphy, one of our Aboriginal Cadets in 2022, has now joined PathWest as a Laboratory Technician earlier this year.
Originally from Fitzroy Crossing, Jack is a Walmajarri and Gooniyandi, who grew up in Perth. With his strong interest in Human Biology and Genetics, Jack shares he is fortunate to be offered a placement at PathWest’s Diagnostic Genomics laboratory.
‘My experience in the Aboriginal Cadetship Program over the past year has been fantastic. It was a great learning opportunity to gain hands-on experience working in a laboratory environment with friendly and supportive team,’ he says.
Currently studying Bachelor of Science, majoring in Biomedical Science at Murdoch University, Jack mentioned his current role as a Laboratory Technician is exactly what he hopes for at the end of his degree.
Speaking about his heritage, he feels lucky to be able to return to country and visit his family at least once a year.
‘Living off of country, it is very important to me to spend time with my family. Being together keeps our relationship and connection to culture strong, which is essential for my nieces and nephews growing up in Perth. We love to get together for family barbecues, morning walks along the beach, or simply spend the day in each other’s company.’
2023 Aboriginal Cadetship Event
Sharing his experience in the Aboriginal Cadetship Program, Jack will be presenting at the 2023 Aboriginal Cadetship Event, a networking event across different Health Service Providers (HSPs) towards the end of July.
