Cytogenetics

The Cytogenetics department at Fiona Stanley Hospital provides a haematological cytogenetic service for the whole of Western Australia. We are the only laboratory in WA that offers this service and we receive samples from all the teaching hospitals, private laboratories and regional centers. This service provides diagnostic, prognostic and monitoring information for acute and chronic myeloid and lymphoid leukaemia, myeloma and lymphoma. We are a Children’s Oncology Group (USA) registered laboratory and perform the cytogenetics on all childhood leukaemias to stratify them to treatment protocols. Solid tumor cytogenetics is performed in the cytogenetic laboratory at KEMH.

We complement conventional cytogenetics with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)to look at specific genetic abnormalities such as BCR-ABL1 rearrangements in chronic myeloid leukaemia.
