Gynaecological Pathology and Gynaecological Oncology Pathology

The gynaecological pathology team is a sub-specialist group primarily based at the QEII Medical Centre and the King Edward Memorial Hospital.

The group provides a high quality and timely diagnostic service for a range of gynaecological specimens including vulvo-vaginal, cervical, uterine, tubo-ovarian and pelvic specimens. The team has access to on-site immunohistochemistry and the latest molecular ancillary testing to aid diagnosis. Gynaecological pathologists participate in weekly cervical smear/biopsy cytology-histology review sessions and attend and present cases at the fortnightly FSH colposcopy multidisciplinary meetings, including review of external gynaecological specimens as requested by clinicians.

Furthermore, the PathWest Anatomical Pathology Department at King Edward Memorial Hospital provides a gynaecology pathology service to the public patients of Western Australia and is a referral centre for gynaecological oncology services. The Histopathology Department routinely receives a high volume of simple and complex general gynaecological and gynaecological oncology surgical specimens from major public, regional and private hospitals for processing and reporting. Our Consultant Histopathologists and laboratory staff are subspecialty trained and have extensive experience. The laboratory is currently staffed by six sessional pathologists and offers histopathology, cytopathology, frozen section services, as well as ancillary studies including immunohistochemistry and molecular studies.  The Department provides the hospital with a daily after hour’s on-call pathology service that covers intraoperative frozen section reporting and urgent reporting of histopathology and cytopathology specimens. Regular teaching sessions, as well as weekly Multi-Disciplinary Tumour Board meetings are held.  The Department encourages research into pathological aspects of gynaecological cancers and is part of the postgraduate programme for registrar training.
