  • Discontinuation of Genetic Testing for Chronic Idiopathic Pancreatitis
Discontinuation of Genetic Testing for Chronic Idiopathic Pancreatitis 30 May 2025 Following a recent review, PathWest will discontinue genetic testing for chronic idiopathic pancreatitis (CIP) from 03 June 2025. This decision follows a clinical and operational review which identified: CIP testing is not supported by Medicare. Current CIP testing has limited clinical utility in comparison to the international benchmark: Low diagnostic yield of less than 10% compared to 20 to 30% (PMID: 39172977). Broader and more comprehensive hereditary pancreatitis testing is available internationally through other providers. These include: Canterbury Health Laboratories (NZ) – PRSS1, SPINK1, CFTR, CELA3B ARUP Laboratories (USA) – CFTR, CTRC, PRSS1, SPINK1 Prevention Genetics (USA) – CASR, CFTR, CPA1, CTRC, PRSS1, SPINK1, TRPV6 Blueprint Genetics (USA) – APOA5, APOC2, CFTR, CPA1, CTRC, GPIHBP1, PRSS1, SPINK1, UBR1 We ap...

  • PathWest Star of the Future - Sam Neeling 27 April 2022 Samuel Neeling, Medical Scientist, Immunology, is one of the successful recipients of the PathWestEarly Career Research Awards that were awarded in February 2022. Sam's research project will be investigating “In-vitro measurement of the neutralising effect of anti-GMCSF or anti-IFN-γ antibodies on STAT phosphorylation using patient serum and donor peripheral blood mononuclear cells”. Sam explains his project as, “Cytokines and Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (STAT) proteins are important for mediating cellular immune function. GM-CSF and Interferon γ (IFN- γ) are crucial cytokines that act on monocytes via the JAK/STAT pathway. Anti- IFN-γ antibodies are a known cause of adult onset immunodeficiency and anti-GM-CSF antibodies are associated with Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis (PAP). Autoantibodies against these cytokines have bee...

  • PathWest Star of the Future - Daniel White 04 April 2022 Daniel White, Medical Scientist, Biochemistry, is one of the successful recipients of the Chief Pathologist Early Career Research Awards that were awarded at the PathWestConsultant Pathologists' Symposium inFebruary 2022. Daniel's research project will be investigating “Utilising Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) at patient triage will provide superior rate of detection of alcohol-induced injury than direct alcohol measurements alone”. Daniel explains his project as, “Detecting dangerous alcohol consumption can be quite difficult because current laboratory testing methods can only detect heavy drinking in the past 12-18 or so hours, or after damage has already been inflicted on the body from alcohol exposure. Clinicians also rely on patient testimony to establish the amount and duration of alcohol consumption, which can be unreliable. In the Emergency Department in particular,...

  • FISH testing - a PathWest collaboration 17 March 2022 Diagnostic Genomics at PathWest recently featured in relation to the ongoing collaboration with Genetic Services of WA in the context of diagnosis of rare diseases. FISH tests are routinely used in the diagnosis, subclassification and prognostication of a variety of tumours, including; lymphomas soft tissue malignancies lung cancers mesotheliomas brain tumours salivary gland cancers melanomas tumours of childhood, and more.
