PP block celebrates 10 years (25 September) 06 September 2023 PP block turns 10 on Monday 25 September 2023! While we have all come to recognise PP block from its bright red blood cell pattern from the outside, what some of us may not know is that prior to the existence of PP block, PathWest, which was part of North Metropolitan Health Service before becoming its own Health Service Provider in 2018, was servicing Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital from labs at J and K blocks. With the WA Health Clinical Services Framework 2005-2015 outlining the need to reorganise public hospital services in the metropolitan area, this required an expansion and reorganisation of tertiary level pathology services on the QEII site. PP block was commissioned in 2013 – a world class pathology facility. It was opened by former Health Minister, Hon Kim Hames on 25 September 2013. The construction of PP block allowed PathWest to aggregate statewide clinic genetics di...

National Science Week 2023 Spotlight - Susannah Molloy 22 August 2023 This year's National Science Week, PathWest shines a spotlight on our regional medical scientists. Meet Susannah Molloy, Medical Scientist at PathWest Esperance. Susannah’s interest in health sciences stemmed from childhood visits to Princess Margaret Hospital (now, Perth Children’s Hospital), where she was exposed to various medical professions and developed a keen interest in the field. Her fascination with understanding the mechanisms and rationales behind medical procedures led her to closely observe them, even though she playfully referred to phlebotomists as ‘vampires’ as a child. Growing up in a farm, Susannah pursued her high school education by correspondence. Transitioning to university life was a significant shift. While she enjoyed aspects of being in the city but realised she didn’t want to be restricted to metropolitan work. Due to that, Susa...

National Science Week 2023 Spotlight - Monica Neil 21 August 2023 This year's National Science Week, PathWest shines a spotlight on our regional medical scientists. Meet Monica Neil, currently Acting Medical Scientist in Charge at PathWest Albany. From a young age, Monica has always been fascinated with science. It wasn’t until year 11 that she decided to pursue a career in it. After high school, she chose a Biology degree, majoring in Molecular Biology. After completing the degree, Monica found the career opportunities were sparse. She moved to the Goldfields in the early 2000s and started a job at PathCentre (what is now PathWest) as a technical assistant. ‘I loved the job. I knew that medical science was the career I wanted to pursue. I started to investigate avenues of study that I could complete remotely. I started at Curtin University around the same time I started a family. I was able to do two units remotely, but once those were co...

National Science Week 2023 Spotlight - Ben Payne 19 August 2023 This year's National Science Week, PathWest shines a spotlight on our regional medical scientists. Meet Ben Payne, Senior Medical Scientist at PathWest Bunbury. Ben’s path to becoming a Medical Scientist was not as straightforward. Though Ben has always had a keen interest in science, he shared ‘I wasn't exactly a model student during my high school years and left school early to undertake an apprenticeship in Baking.’ After 10 years in that industry, Ben decided to pursue a higher education and applied to study Food Science and Technology, ‘which seemed a logical progression at the time’ Ben added. ‘The first year of Food Science included units in microbiology, human biology and chemistry. Studying these subjects re-awakened the nerd in me. I was truly blown away by the complexity of the human body – how all those intricate physical, molecular a...

Going to university to carry out a Bachelor of Science degree in the health and medical field was inevitable for him. At the time he didn’t know specifically what he wanted to do. Takunda pursued an undergraduate’s course in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at The University of Western Australia. Takunda shared ‘As part of the course, we visited the pathology museum in UWA Nedlands, where each specimen was displayed with an anonymous clinical history and a pathological disease.
