Clinical Haematologist wins prestigious award 06 November 2023 Congratulations to Professor Chan Cheah, Clinical Haematologist at PathWest and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, who’s been named Cancer Council WA’s 2023 Cancer Researcher of the Year for his outstanding contribution to cancer research. Prof Cheah is also a finalist in the recentWestern Australian 2023 Young Tall Poppy Science Award. Prof Cheah is one of the most prominent lymphoma researchers internationally. In 2016, he founded Blood Cancer Research in WA to address an unmet need for patients across the state, and since then, more than 800 people with lymphoma and blood cancers have entered into clinical trials. Microbiology Medical Scientist – one of two winners of the 2023 ASM Jim Pittard Early Career Award 06 November 2023 Congratulations to Microbiology FSH Medical Scientist, Dr Shakeel Mowlaboccus for being one of two recipients of the 2023 Australian Society for Microbiology (ASM) Jim Pittard Early Career Award. Dr Mowlaboccus shared ‘I am honoured to have received the 2023 ASM Jim Pittard Early Career Award. This award is presented to two early career microbiologists each year and it was a pleasure sharing it with Dr Luu from the University of Technology Sydney. I felt extremely proud that my research and contributions have been recognised by the society and it has motivated me to work harder towards my goal for a career in Microbiology. Delay in NMDA receptor antibody testing 16 October 2023 We have been recently informed of a several week delay in the production of the NMDA receptor antibody test. We have been in close contact with the manufacturers, who have advised that tests will become available in the coming weeks. At this stage, we are hoping to resume routine testing within the next three to four weeks. We do have some limited tests available; these will be restricted to patients in whom there is a high clinical suspicion and urgent clinical need. Ongoing delays in testing for mannose binding lectin (MBL) levels 18 September 2023 We have been notified about a new supply issue for the replacement Mannose Binding Lectin (MBL) test which was introduced in August 2023 after the unexpected withdrawal of our previous commercial kit in December 2022. We are in close contact with the manufacturers and have been advised that a new modified form of the test should be available in the coming weeks. At this stage, we are hoping to validate the new MBL assay and resume testing by the end of October 2023, noting a substantial backlog from the previous supply interruption. This passion led her to study Medicine in Sydney, where she delved into the intricacies of human diseases. Wendy pursued a Doctorate at Oxford University, where she discovered a calling in pathology, specifically haematology. Wendy dedicated herself to understanding blood disorders, particularly in those battling the relentless challenge of leukaemia.
