Currently a Laboratory Technician at the Media Manufacturing Facility, FSH Microbiology, Aaron is someone who always steps up to fill a need as he selflessly commits time to deal with impromptu issues and ensure the workplace runs smoothly, safely and efficiently as possible. Aaron is a great example of an employee embracing and living the PathWest values. PathWest intra-discipline collaboration improves WA population health 04 August 2023 The WA Newborn Bloodspot Screening (NBS) Program is one of the WA health system’s most important and successful population health programs. All babies born in WA are eligible for screening for the detection of around 27 groups of extremely serious but treatable inherited conditions. PathWest NBS Laboratory manages the Program and laboratory analysis of over 30,000 bloodspots each year. Around 60 babies are identified with a specific disorder amenable to early detection and treatment. They are referred to medical specialists at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) for urgent care and further diagnostic testing by PathWest, giving these babies the best chance of leading as normal and healthy a life as possible. From Aboriginal Cadet to Laboratory Technician 07 July 2023 Jack Murphy, one of our Aboriginal Cadets in 2022, has now joined PathWest as a Laboratory Technician earlier this year. Originally from Fitzroy Crossing, Jack is a Walmajarri and Gooniyandi, who grew up in Perth. With his strong interest in Human Biology and Genetics, Jack shares he is fortunate to be offered a placement at PathWest’s Diagnostic Genomics laboratory. ‘My experience in the Aboriginal Cadetship Program over the past year has been fantastic. It was a great learning opportunity to gain hands-on experience working in a laboratory environment with friendly and supportive team,’ he says. Congratulations to our Employee of the Season Djeran 2023 21 June 2023 Congratulations to Zoe O'Keefe for being awarded the Employee of the Season Djeran 2023. Zoe has worked at PathWest since 2007 and is currently Acting Medical Scientist in Charge in the Molecular Diagnostics team at Microbiology, QEII. During the response to COVID-19, Zoe regularly went above and beyond her normal duties to build and validate new assays for PCR testing used to detect specific pathogens critical for timely diagnosis and infection control. Despite having multiple priorities in her role, she consistently exhibits a positive attitude by providing support to her team and junior staff in resolving technical issues. Recognising our Environmental Sustainability Steering Group on World Environment Day 05 June 2023 PathWest Environmental Sustainability Steering Group (Steering Group) was established in mid-2022 with the aim of improving and enhancing our environmental sustainability as an organisation. This is supported through the 'protect our environment' strategic pillar in ourPathWest Strategic Plan 2021-2025. Over the past year, theSteering Group has made great progress and developed proactive strategies to reduce our environmental impact as an organisation. Aside from collectively recycling more than 22,000 coffee cups, we have also recycled over 15,000 Biofire aluminium canisters, and other items such as plastic bottle caps, clear soft plastics, and medicine blister packs.
